Preimplantation Genetic Testing

PGT

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is the genetic analysis of embryos obtained through IVF-ICSI treatment.

Who is preimplantation genetic testing suitable for?

The method is suitable for detecting chromosomal defects (abnormalities present in entire sections of one or more chromosomes – sometimes called translocations) or isolated genetic anomalies (where only one gene or characteristic has abnormalities). The aim of PGT is to identify suitable embryos for transfer that do not carry the specific defect.

In what circumstances is PGT treatment both authorised and possible?

In Germany, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) has been regulated since 2011 by the Preimplantation Act. The procedure can only be carried out at a few approved genetic institutes and clinics. Our clinic is the one authorised to carry out PGT treatment for the northern Bavarian region. Before the very complex treatment can be carried out, an application must be submitted to the Bavarian Ethics Committee. The relevant medical genetic institute is responsible for the procedure, and, if necessary, carries out genetic tests of the samples after approval.
